The fitness community is full of passionate supporters of a particular route. These are Crossfitters, runners, strength athletes, Yogis or bodybuilders. All of them develop their bodies for a narrowly defined goal. Add a tribe and an unquenchable passion, and you have one of the greatest gifts in the world. But many do not find it, or maybe they did, but it has lost its luster.

There is nothing wrong with trying and playing. Allow mood to guide you through a daily dose of less structured exercise. We need less “lift even bro,” and more environment attracts general activity. For most people, this is the ticket. Be human. Reconnect with your body and your health through a more exploratory approach, which overflows and flows with your interests, your moods and the constraints of time and the environment.

The nomadic man, who marked most of human history, was a thousand-year-old man. She had to be strong, well-conditioned, balanced and capable of performing millions of different tasks. During a given week, life can include long hikes, a few runs, swimming, playful wrestling, constant squatting, wearing awkward materials like firewood and a combination of sprinting, jumping and climbing to life and passed away. Every day demanded something different. This ever-changing variety of exercise and diet made primitive humans impressive body specimens.

Today’s world requires much less body Labor, and much more Specialization. We work in narrow areas, often separated from the industries we rely on to survive. This is accompanied by a separation of our body that we want to mitigate by equally specialized and industrialized approaches. Our gyms are divided by goals: Cardio machines here, strength there and stretching areas are in this corner. We even share weight machines with dumbbells, dumbbells and machines that are separated by body parts.

Plan to Fail or Plan to Succeed

To some extent, we cannot escape our reductionist approach. People are very skilled in categorization, an essential tool in this era of information overload. Progress needs structure and discipline.

Optimally, a feeling of exploration and play would fuel our movement. The paradox is that, for the most part, freedom follows rules and Routine. In our sedentary world, movement requires some planning. Literally, most will stop moving if they do not follow a training plan. Lack of leadership or foresight leads to a tendency to wander aimlessly, feel paralyzed by the abundance of choice and never find time for Fitness. If we don’t plan, we plan to fail.

In a world that does not favor movement, we have to create certain blocks of time for movement. It should not be rigid. Rigidity stifles creativity and pleasure and brings Stress when life forces us to adapt.

Another Type of Program

The solution is a training program that guides you to a daily movement block while offering the flexibility to work as you find most interesting, attractive and best suited to your current needs. This requires automatic regulation: the ability to choose the type and dose of movement that your body needs. Resize the intensity based on how you feel compared to the previous days. Most importantly, do what you like.

This approach helps you develop the tools to succeed for a lifetime. They will move better, look better and feel better than ever. You will not be awesome in any discipline, but you will maintain your body condition and honor the creative and generalist nature that made man so successful.

Guiding Principles: Establish wider Routines

Create expectations for time blocks dedicated to movement. Keep this promise to yourself and show yourself no matter what. Have Answers for:

  • When do you move every day?
  • Where?
  • Is it different from day to day?
  • What do you do if the Plan blows up?
  • For example, Can you find time for two rounds of Tabata on days when Chaos reigns?

Guiding Principles: Getting Started

A body at rest tends to stay at rest. No matter how much you enjoy your workout blocks, there will be times when you won’t want to switch from sedentary to active. To counter this trend, immediately start warming up. Perform the same warm-up every day to eliminate the delay that allows you to get out of the movement. After five minutes, you will be delighted that you have started.
